Dawn--
Thank you so much for your comment. We were impressed by the program that was presented to us, but your comment helps put my experience in perspective. You are absolutely right that I have had very little contact with the corrections system. I encourage you to share more of your husband's experiences with us by joining StopDirectFile.org on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=129080277687), if you haven't already. We appreciate your interest and your support and we hope that you will continue to blog at StopDirectFile.org

Although you seem to think that they are driven by this mission statement, I assure you that their actions speak something entirely different. My husband who has been at Limon now for over 2 years and in the prison system for about 12. Gave his life to Christ two years ago 2 years ago, trying to do right by God and his family, he retired from being the don of a powerful gang (by the grace of God he got out alive), has not had any write ups in over two years, has kept a job, his points the lowest that they have ever been while in the prison system and they currently have him in segregation for no apparent reason. There was a gang fight that broke out a couple months ago and they seem to think that he has something to do with it, because they don’t know what happened or who was involved. We really don’t know why he is in there At least they won't give him an answer. They are only supposed to keep them in there for 10 business days to do an investigation. It has been over three weeks, he is still there and they have not charged him with anything . My husband is trying so hard to turn his life around but because he is "acting out of character" from what he has been in the past by going to church, doing Bible studies, having his wife (me) pray and encourage other inmates and send them mail that don’t get a lot of mail of support from the outside. We are thinking this makes the staff a little uneasy (This per my husbands assessment after being questioned over and over again from the gang coordinator.)
You were there for what seems to be a couple hours, in which is not very difficult to stage a façade in a short amount of time. I have been going up there every weekend to visit my husband, and have even met Mr. Medina on few occasions I assure you that (the mission statement) is really not how things work there. I think the mission statement is great, but it doesn’t do anything unless it is being implied.

According to this website (http://www.coax.net/people/lwf/HRB_SW.HTM) the average living expense for an American slave was $38.00 per year. Adjusted for inflation (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi), that is approximately $896.58/year. At $0.28 per hour a prisoner in the Maricopa County jail will gross, at most, $645.12. If they gave the equivalent amount of labor to a slave (sunrise to sunset, 6 days a week), they would still only earn $887.04. I repeat: Many slaves did and do make a better living than prisoners in the Maricopa County jail.

Thank you for your comment Sharron. Are these prisoners being used for slave labor or not?

To your points:
<em>1) Prisoners in America are fed, not abused, and generally treated far better than those in any other nation.</em>

Prisoners in America may, generally, be treated better than prisoners in other countries, but apparently not as well in Joe Arpaio's jail.

<em>2) If the goal of prison is to make the prisoners not want to come back, then I’d say the good Sheriff is doing a bang up job.</em>

Funny. For some reason, I don't see Joe Arpaio publishing a reduced recidivism rate. Show me that Arpaio's jail keeps people from committing more crime and going back to jail.

<em>3) Soldiers overseas are fighting for the freedom of American citizens who obey the law. There is nothing valid in your emotional rant regarding those brave men and women. Americans who commit crimes and are sentenced by a jury of their peers are not entitled to the freedoms that law abiding citizens enjoy. To stoop to the rhetorical absurdity of claiming that what Arizona is doing is somehow an insult to our military shows just how little the author of this understands the military.</em>

It used to be illegal to drink liquor in this country, but most people disobeyed that law. According to your logic the military shouldn't have fought WWII for us. Joe Arpaio runs a county jail, not a prison. Are all the people on his chain gang convicted? If they're being held in County Jail, it's very possible that they are pending trial. It used to be that you were innocent until proven guilty. So prove that everyone in that jail has been found guilty of a crime, Ms. Prosecutor.

<em>4) Those prisoners decided that they could take a life, or rape a woman, or molest a child, or destroy someone’s property, I do not think they should be living in Air Conditioned comfort plotting their next crime wave.</em>

You can't know why each of those prisoners is being held and your claim that they are being held in county jail for a murder conviction is beyond specious. What we do know is that they are being subjected to hard labor for less than 4% of federal minimum wage ($7.25), fed meals that are 10% of the average cost for a prison meal ($3.85) and are being forced to pay for it themselves with 53% of their daily wage. All under conditions that could cause heat stroke and death. Many slaves <em>did and do</em> make better livings. Perhaps it isn't a coincidence that nearly 90% of people in prison are people of color. Slave traders like Arpaio just found a politically correct way to "get-r-done."

I so agree with you Seth. I've often thought the very same thing. If the juvenile system isn't tough enough for a juvenile then change it. Don't just decide suddenly that a child who can't vote, drive a car, get married or even live on his own is suddenly mature enough to make appropriate and wise decisions. Especially when many of these kids grew up in circumstances and with families where bad decisions were being made all the time. I just can't understand the DA in the John Caudle case. As more facts about child abuse come out, the community is rallying around John, yet the DA is unmoved. I've said it before but the DA seems to be out for vengeance, not justice.
